Over the last 25 years, I have travelled the world cataloguing my experiences in photographs; visiting countries, cities, experiencing different cultures and environments as well as social and humanitarian aspects which have, at times, been constrained by the requirements of the media.I wanted to pursue a more heartfelt dimension to my photography; a more unique approach and less like other images that exist. How could I retain my individuality and at the same time be authentic and true to my own ideals?
Keeping a degree of creative detachment while ensuring a delivery of expression in the current photography world is challenging; we live in a world where images flood our everyday lives, where we have become so used to them that we see them through the same eyes, where marketing and the mundane determine all the peculiarities. It has almost become an obsession to find ways of creating a different vision and a way to express words through photography.
After 28 years of having a ‘press card’ in my possession, 2013 was a time to change and head towards new professional horizons whilst being mindful of the challenges of this job.
The balance that must be struck in order to express emotion, unleash your imagination, capture the soul while moving from perception to feelings and from observation to reflection within documentary and conceptual photography is a complex task in today’s rapidly changing world of Photography.
It is a singular approach and often a challenge of reality to shift a subjective approach before the confrontation of what is reality. The biggest challenge is to highlight the contradiction of subjective reality to actual reality. What makes photography fascinating is observing the constant evolution of boundaries in different ways of expression.
Today and since a relatively recent anchorage in the territory of Mayenne, this work turns resolutely towards subjects that evoke the conflict between man and nature, and the incapacity of modernity to develop outside this antagonism.
The work that I am showcasing in these photo galleries is simply trying to express, at times, a point of view or an emotion. This is a snapshot of what is to follow.
Parcourir le monde pendant plus de 25 ans. Publier des images souvent situées au confluent du voyage et du témoignage. Variété des sujets traités ; social et humanitaire, environnement et patrimoine, portraits de villes… Une pratique de la photographie parfois dispersée, soumise aux opportunités du marché de la presse écrite.
Puis vient la recherche d’une expression plus sincère, moins complaisante avec les images d’ailleurs. Comment concilier les exigences du réel et de l’humain avec la réalité d’une expérience singulière, en affirmant sa propre vision ?
Prendre ses distances avec une certaine emphase de l’expression photographique. L’image envahit le quotidien comme un flot mêlé où la marchandise et la trivialité emportent toutes les singularités. L’obsession de porter un regard différent, de rechercher précisément cette singularité d’une écriture visuelle. Il n’est pas toujours simple de se situer dans le monde de la photographie (documentaire et/ou plasticienne) pour exprimer sa sensibilité, son émotion et développer son imaginaire.
Certes, l’enjeu de l’image « est de délivrer le réel de son principe de réalité » selon Jean Baudrillard, pour qu’elle nous touche par elle-même, « qu’elle nous impose son illusion spécifique ».
C’est une approche solitaire et souvent un défi à la réalité. Car il s’agit de faire passer la démarche subjective, l’esthétique, avant la confrontation avec ce réel.
Ce qui rend la photographie toujours aussi passionnante, c’est d’observer l’évolution constante des frontières entre les différents modes d’expression.
Aujourd’hui et depuis un ancrage relativement récent dans le territoire de la Mayenne, ce travail s’oriente résolument vers des sujets qui évoquent le conflit entre l’homme et la nature, et l’incapacité de la modernité à se développer en dehors de cet antagonisme.
Le travail fragmentaire et dispersé qui est présenté dans ces galeries, tente plus simplement d’exprimer parfois un point de vue, parfois une émotion.
Quelques esquisses sur des chemins de traverse, dont l’exploration se poursuit.
